Van caught on ANPR camera

Automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) cameras capture vehicle registration plate numbers using optical character recognition technology.

Invented in the UK in 1976 and entering widespread use from the 1990s, ANPR technology is often associated with speed cameras and police cameras. However, it can also be used in closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems for security and access purposes.

In this blog post, we’ll break down just how ANPR cameras work.

How ANPR cameras work

  1. Image Capture. The first step is to capture an image of the vehicle in question. An ANPR camera automatically photographs each vehicle as it passes into view.

  2. Processing & Number Plate Identification. The weather, time of day, camera angle and the speed of the vehicle all mean that the image will need to be processed to improve quality and readability for the next step. Additionally, the number plate will also need to be located within the image. This is done using software that can locate the edges of the registration plate and its orientation.

  3. Optical Character Recognition (OCR). With the image quality improved and the number plate identified, OCR software can now identify the letters and numbers on the plate. These are then converted to digital characters, a format that the software can use going forward.

  4. Database Scan. With the number plate now identified and recorded, it can be compared against records / databases of registered vehicles. Depending on the particular use case, this can be used to identify vehicles with outstanding tickets, those that have failed an MOT, or those that have been reported as stolen. Private companies operating ANPR cameras might maintain their own databases, and these records may include the registration numbers of employees, customers and VIPs.

  5. Data Storage & Processing. The number plate data can also be stored and transmitted to relevant systems and authorities for various purposes, e.g. issuing speeding tickets or parking tickets. Private companies operating CCTV can integrate ANPR cameras with barrier systems that automatically grant entry to authorised vehicles in their own database.

As you can see, ANPR isn’t just a tool for the enforcement of the law. For businesses, ANPR cameras can be a sophisticated and convenient way to monitor and maintain secure vehicle entry points.

At IDS Security, we have extensive experience in designing and installing security systems to suit the client’s needs. We can install bespoke integrated ANPR cameras with security barriers to protect your premises, allowing you to control access and vehicle flow on your property.
