The UK is still in the grip of a deadly coronavirus pandemic. New cases of COVID-19 are still being reported every day, so it remains important for all of us to do our bit to slow the spread of this disease.
One crucial precaution is to stay at home if you are displaying any of the following coronavirus symptoms:
- A high temperature
- A new, continuous cough
- Changes to your sense of smell or taste
If you have one or more of these symptoms, you may be infected and should self-isolate at home in order to avoid infecting others.
But taking responsibility for your own health is one thing. What should you do if you're a business owner and one of your employees comes to work with one or more symptoms of COVID-19?
If an employee displays COVID-19 symptoms at work...
- Send them home immediately. COVID-19 spreads via microscopic respiratory droplets (such as those produced when you cough or sneeze) or when someone comes into contact with a contaminated surface. If someone in the workplace has COVID-19, they risk spreading it to the rest of your workforce, so you should not allow anyone with symptoms to remain on the premises.
- Advise them to follow NHS guidance. The NHS website will tell your employee what they should be doing while they are symptomatic and potentially infectious. Most importantly, the individual should self-isolate and request a test in order to confirm whether they have COVID-19.
- Do not permit them to return to work while they're self-isolating. Your employee can work from home if they are well enough to do so (if not, they may be entitled to sick pay). You should check in regularly and do what you can to support the individual's wellbeing and mental health, especially if they live alone.
Of course, if the person's life is in immediate danger, you should call 999 and request emergency medical assistance.

We at IDS Security can supply and install thermal imaging cameras in your place of work to help you spot potentially infectious individuals.
These state-of-the-art thermal imaging systems will tell you if someone on your premises has an elevated temperature (a common symptom of COVID-19). The cameras can scan multiple people per second, and they're calibrated to prevent false alarms from other heat sources.
